No discussion of heavy metal is complete without the United Kingdom. Britain gave us Black Sabbath, arguably the originators of the genre. It was the birthplace us the New Wave of British Heavy Metal: the classic breed of bands like Iron Maiden and Diamond Head that influenced US thrashers like Metallica. These days, bands like Bullet For My Valentine have arisen over the last few years to fly the flag for Her Majesty’s Metal, with even younger upstarts like Asking Alexandria entering the fray with vigorous enthusiasm and youthful energy.
WITH ONE LAST BREATH has arrived to carry on the tradition of raucous English metal, bringing with them a dash of hardcore, screamo and electrified melody for modern measure. With a nod toward American contemporaries like Devil Wears Prada, Attack Attack! and We Came As Romans, the five men in the York, England based band have staked their claim in Generation Heavy with an arsenal of songs filled with positivity, passion and power.
Sharing stages with a number of vital bands like Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men, Blessthefall, Chelsea Grin, Skindred and Architects, WITH ONE LAST BREATH garnered the attention of the Artery Foundation, the management firm instrumental in the early careers of bands like A Day To Remember, Breathe Carolina and Motionless In White. TKO Booking, home to Motorhead, Mudvayne and Anthrax, took them on, as well. Together with their team, they are planning and plotting a steady takeover of the modern scene.
Spencer Costello’s impassioned voice leads the charge atop steady rhythms laid down by bass player Joe Lancaster and drummer Chris Bowling. The brotherly duo of Sam and Joe Graves interweave choppy and bottom heavy riffs with adept musicality and a series of emotionally driven, blues-based, proper guitar solos. The virtuoso brothers (Sam also sings) own a recording studio together which provides an opportunity for them to constantly create new ideas and maintain their chops, taking on the bulk of the band’s songwriting as a duo.
WITH ONE LAST BREATH puts positivity and human interaction highest on their list of priorities as a band, taking care to meet every fan they can and discuss what the band means to people with as much depth as possible. After a few years of paying dues, they are still overwhelmed to see the type of enthusiastic response their music and live show can now elicit. One of the songs on the group’s forthcoming album is specifically about their fans, thanking them for the support.
Group sing-alongs, guitar solos and total interaction between band and audience is the name of the game for WITH ONE LAST BREATH, who in a short amount of time have managed to bridge the gap between melody and heaviness without compromising either side of their sound. Dedicated, motivated and outgoing, the band truly endeavors to carry on, even WITH ONE LAST BREATH.
